Dr. Roche's Travel Tips

Dr. Ted Roche gave an excellent presentation on traveling with a handicap.  Among the nuggets shared are the following:

1. When making air reservations, make it directly with the airline.  Only by making the reservation directly with the airline can you be assured of getting the needed accessible seating.

2. Hotels vary widely in what they consider to be a handicapped room.  Work directly with the hotel to ensure you get what you need (e.g. a roll in shower or an elevated toilet).

3. He rents both a manual wheelchair and a scooter for his trips.  These are delivered directly to the hotel and the hotel and they will even bring them out to your airport limousine.

4. All hand control equipped vans are not equal.  Dr. Roche has had good luck with both Hertz and Avis.

5. The Broadway and Lincoln Center Theaters in New York City have excellent handicapped accessible seating.  He stays at the New York Sheraton Hotel and Towers because it is centrally located.

6. Convention centers can be challenging because often a specific elevator needs to be taken to reach a specific area of the convention center.

7. Several travel aids were shared

    a. A packable cane/crutch holder.

    b. Handybar - A device that gives a much needed handhold getting in and out of vehicles.
